On April 9, 1943, the General Directorate of Military Counterintelligence “Smersh” was established within the People’s Commissariat of Defense of the USSR. The tasks of the structure included the fight against intelligence and sabotage activities of foreign and primarily German-fascist special services. Front-line reconnaissance and counterintelligence work was carried out by officers of the 4th division of the GUK ‘SMERSH’. The most difficult and dangerous tasks fell to their lot: espionage, counterintelligence, sabotage, establishment, abduction and liquidation of especially important figures of the enemy.
